Therapy of the Difficult Divorce

The difficult divorce is not a single phenomenon. It manifests itself in numerous ways. Therapy must focus on both of the parents` efforts towards reorganizing their relationships with each other and with their children; the well-being of the children must be a priority; therapy must deal with the realities of divorce and therefore work with subsystems within the family; hostile parents can be brought together for therapeutic work if the encounter is controlled. Focus is on lapses in parental responsibility, uncontrolled disputes, and recruitment, of the children into taking sides. In warring couples, the work involves trying to preen a protracted conflict.
